Specifications

The engineered timber structural roof and floor system is a major portion of a buildings structural system and deserves an understanding of the specification to avoid surprises and keep projects in budget and provide a quality structure.

Timberweld's goal is to have our products meet or exceed expectations. See AITC Tech Note #24 (Guide For Specifying Structural Glued Laminated Timber), attached.

Suggested Specification:

Caution Suggestion, "Canned Specifications":
Many "canned specifications" are unintended or self-serving.

Regarding FSC:
Some "canned specs" include FSC on LEED whether it is intended or not, and is one of the first things to be scrapped in over–budget projects.

Regarding Architectural and Premium Appearance: Some "canned specification" require inserts on all voids over 1/4 inch whether intended or not. To avoid excessive synthetic filler, we suggest "patches of similar color and grain for all voids over 2 inches (optional) long to meet the required premium or architectural standards."

Treating Specification: Some pressure treated beam specifications from "canned specs" are unintentional and not necessary. Pressure treating could break down the cell structure making solid or laminated timber more acceptable to checking. It does not save on maintenance, and is not compatible or predictable with some stains. Alaska Cedar is environmentally and people friendly, and a good alternative for above ground applications.

Beam Lay-up Combinations: Balanced lay-up (V8) is frequently specified when not structurally required. For assistance on appropriate combination design, contact Timberweld.
